What Can Be Donated to Charity?[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”http://thegoodwillcharity.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/donate-cloths.jpg” align=”center” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.3.2″ hover_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.3.2″ text_font=”Roboto|300|||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_letter_spacing=”1px” text_line_height=”1.8em” hover_enabled=”0″]
The holidays are right around the corner, and with that comes a wonderful season of giving. This year do your best to give not just to your loved ones, but to your community. Whether you support your local thrift shop or want to give to a bigger cause, there are many items you can donate. It’s good for you and supports those in need—what could be better during the season of giving?
Although part of you may want to give everything you can, there are a few restrictions on what charities allow you to donate. Before you donate, research the charity and figure out what they accept. For example, GreenDrop does not accept cars, but other charities do. To help you have the best giving experience possible, we created a general guide of what can be donated to charity—check it out![/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.3.2″ text_font=”Roboto|300|||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_letter_spacing=”1px” text_line_height=”1.8em” hover_enabled=”0″]
First, the most simplistic way to donate to a charity is with a monetary donation. Make financial donations to your chosen charity by check or credit card. If you’re hoping to reap a tax reward, with monetary donations you can keep better track of your giving. Reach out to your charity and see what works best for them when it comes to payment, but when in doubt, a check is always a great option.
Clothes donations are the most popular type of charitable contribution. They are a great way to give back to the community and get rid of any extra clutter in your home. While not all charities accept clothing donations, many of them will take a wide range of clothing items.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”http://thegoodwillcharity.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Wireless-Over-Ear-headphones.jpg” url=”https://thegoodwillcharity.org/product/updated-10-hours-long-working-time-oem-logo-5-0-wireless-headphone-over-ear-wireless-headset-wireless-earphone-headphone/” url_new_window=”on” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.3.2″ border_radii=”on|12px|12px|12px|12px” border_width_all=”1px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.3.2″ text_font=”Roboto|300|||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_letter_spacing=”1px” text_line_height=”1.8em” hover_enabled=”0″]
Shoes and Bags
Most charities that accept clothes will also accept shoes and bags. From winter boots to sandals, try your best to provide charities with a wide variety of shoes. This will benefit many people—especially during the colder months. This said, a lot of people forget to donate socks, which is another crucial item that many individuals can use. Socks are small, but they make a huge difference in many lives. As for bags, they can range from school backpacks to luggage. Just make sure to call ahead and ensure that the charity can pick up bigger items.
Another big donation category is kitchenware. It’s not just plates and bowls—it ranges from small teaspoons and large ladles to pots and pans. Many charities generally accept crockpots, Tupperware, glasses and cups, serving trays, and other common items as well. If you’re thinking about getting some new kitchenware, donate your old items first![/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”http://thegoodwillcharity.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Screen-Shot-2019-12-01-at-1.18.19-am.png” url=”https://thegoodwillcharity.org/store/” url_new_window=”on” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.3.2″ border_radii=”on|15px|15px|15px|15px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.3.2″ text_font=”Roboto|300|||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_letter_spacing=”1px” text_line_height=”1.8em” hover_enabled=”0″]
Everyone deserves to escape from reality now and then, even if it’s just for a moment. And reading a book is a great way to achieve this. Not all charities accept books, but the ones that do would love to get those old books sitting untouched in your basement. Try to make sure they’re in decent condition, but other than that, basically, any book is acceptable for donating. From classic children’s books to encyclopedias, this season, gift the joy of reading!
Toys and Games
From puzzles to action figures, toys and games are great items to donate. No matter the season, donating these are a great way to draw children out of their technology obsession and back to fostering their imagination!
Again, not all charities will accept art as a donation, so make sure to call before you plan to give it away. However, art is a fantastic thing to donate, and if you can’t donate the piece itself, you could put on your own art auction. Whatever you sell, you can then donate the money to charity. For high-quality artwork, you’ll need to get a qualified appraisal before you donate the piece to charity to ensure you get the correct tax deduction. Do your research before donating high-priced items to make sure you’re giving to a charity that will take care of it.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.3.2″ text_font=”Roboto|300|||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_letter_spacing=”1px” text_line_height=”1.8em” hover_enabled=”0″]
Blankets, comforters, sheets, towels, tablecloths, and more all fall under the category of linens. Before you throw out that blanket, wash it and see if it’s of good enough quality for donation. Especially in the wintertime, charities and shelters desperately need blankets. Think about what it would be like to go without heat in the cold weather—if you couldn’t handle it, consider donating blankets to a shelter or charity.
A lot of people forget how important donating hygiene essentials are. From toothpaste to small bathroom products, these items are incredibly important to different shelters and charities. If these products still have the seal intact, they should be good to donate.
This is a category a lot of people forget about when it comes to charitable donations. As always, you’re going to need to check with the charity to ensure that they will take these items. If they do, know that you’re gifting someone the joy of play. Oftentimes, charities that accept this sort of donation will take everything from camping equipment to various sporting equipment. Additionally, if you have dumbbells that you haven’t used in years, consider donating them. Even bikes are a donation-friendly item!
This isn’t saying donate your entire sectional—it refers more to smaller furniture pieces, such as side tables and wooden chairs. Typically, when you’re trying to figure out whether a charity will take your piece of furniture if it’s over 50 pounds, they probably won’t be able to accept it. Think small items such as coffee tables, lamps, nightstands, rocking chairs, and the like.
Once you go through your home and figure out what exactly you can donate, turn to GreenDrop for your donation pick-up or drop-off services. We partner with charities such as Red Cross, Purple Heart, National Federation of the Blind, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We will turn tour donations into a monetary donation that will greatly aid these charities.
